Role Summary
The Assistant Vice President (AVP), Security Architecture & Advisory is a senior executive role responsible for shaping and executing the enterprise security architecture strategy. This position ensures security and privacy are embedded into technology solutions from inception, enabling secure-by-design, privacy-by-default, and shift-left practices across the organization. Acting as a trusted advisor to executive leadership, the AVP influences strategic technology decisions, drives architectural governance, and positions security as a business enabler.

Key Responsibilities

Enterprise Security Architecture Strategy

  • Define and continuously evolve the enterprise security architecture strategy to support business transformation and innovation.
  • Oversee the design and implementation of secure solutions across infrastructure, applications, data, cloud, and emerging technologies.
  • Establish and enforce architectural principles, standards, and patterns to ensure resilience, scalability, and compliance.

Secure-by-Design & Privacy-by-Default Enablement

  • Partner with architects across the organization to embed secure-by-design and privacy-by-default principles into all technology solutions.
  • Drive shift-left security practices, ensuring security and privacy considerations are integrated early in the development lifecycle.
  • Promote architectural patterns and frameworks that enable proactive risk reduction and compliance.

Executive Advisory & Influence

  • Act as a strategic advisor to senior executives and stakeholders on security risks, emerging threats, and architectural priorities.
  • Provide authoritative guidance during technology planning, procurement, and implementation phases.
  • Align security architecture with enterprise risk management objectives and business strategy.

Governance, Risk Oversight & Reporting

  • Lead participation in enterprise governance forums and architecture review boards to assess and approve critical technology initiatives.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, internal policies, and global risk frameworks.
  • Produce comprehensive Threat and Risk Assessment (TRA) reports documenting inherent and residual risks for IT Risk teams to inform risk treatment plans.

Leadership & Organizational Development

  • Build, mentor, and inspire a high-performing, forward-thinking team of security architects and advisors.
  • Define organizational goals, performance metrics, and talent development strategies aligned with enterprise priorities.
  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement and knowledge sharing across the security architecture function.

Innovation & Emerging Technology Enablement

  • Monitor and evaluate emerging technologies, security trends, and threat landscapes to inform strategic decisions.
  • Champion adoption of advanced tools, platforms, and practices to enhance enterprise security posture.

Collaborative Engagement & Enablement

  • Work collaboratively with peer leaders across technology and business units to ensure a unified, collaborative approach to security architecture.
  • Position security architecture as an enabler of innovation and business agility, not a blocker.
  • Enhance risk transparency and security awareness across the organization through clear, compelling communication.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Security, Engineering, or a related field.
  • 12+ years of experience in cybersecurity, with at least 7+ years in a leadership role focused on security architecture and advisory.
  • Expertise in enterprise architecture, cloud security, application security, and secure development practices.
  • Strong knowledge of security frameworks and standards (e.g., NIST, ISO 27001, TOGAF, SABSA).
  • Proven ability to influence senior executives and shape strategic technology decisions.
  • Relevant certifications such as CISSP, SABSA, TOGAF, CISM, or cloud security credentials (AWS/Azure) highly desirable.

Core Competencies

  • Strategic Vision: Ability to align security architecture with enterprise business and technology objectives.
  • Executive Leadership: Demonstrated success in leading large teams and influencing organizational strategy.
  • Board-Level Communication: Skilled at presenting complex security concepts to executive and non-technical audiences.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Adept at fostering partnerships across diverse teams and business units.
  • Analytical Problem-Solving: Proactive approach to identifying and mitigating architectural risks.

Benefits

  • INCLUSIVE CULTURE AND DIVERSITY: living our core values: Be a Team, Be Accountable, Be Better, engaging with community through Business Resource Groups (BRG communities are volunteer employee-led groups formed around a common interest, identity, or background).
